BACKPACKING TIPS!
1. Eat Heavy Foods, First!
Foods such as, mealpack bars, dried fruits & fresh veggies, bulky foods like muffin, bagels, tortes, etc.., add the most weight to your pack. Eat them first to lighten your load.
2. If you use Gatorade switch to E.mer'gen-C. It is produced by Alacer Corporation, and is a "super energy booster with staying power" containing 25 different electrolytes and has more potassium than Gatorade.
3. Use a small wind up flash light works for 1 hour after winding for 1 minute, this way you don't have to carry any batteries.
4. Use titanium products for your cook wear much lighter than any other cook wear.
5. Instead of carrying a pillow, stuff your clothes into one of your larger stuff sacs--makes a good pillow. Your clothes will be dry & maybe even warm in the morning.
6. Use sand or moss instead of a scouring pad. No soap suds in the water & no dirty pad to mess with.
7. This more than likely is your biggest opportunity to reduce backpack weight. Get a good 2 lb, 20 degree sleeping bag, goose-down is great but if it gets wet your in trouble goosedown does not dry out very fast, I prefer a (comparable synthetic) sleeping bag it dry's out faster if it gets wet and a good 3 lb 3 or 4-season tent. NothFace makes some good ones for the weight.
8. I do not carry allot of clothes maybe 2 pairs of pants, socks, underwear, etc instead wash the clothes you have, clothes weigh allot, the less you carry the lighter the load you have to carry.
9. Make a check list of everything you will need, then lay it all out on the floor and check it off to make sure you have it. When you see that you have checked off everything on your list then pack it up, I usually forget very little if anything when I do it this way.
10. Lay all your food out before you pack it up, setting it in groups based on what you will eat each day of your trip, then always pack a couple of days extra as you may need it in case of emergency, if something were to happen and you had to stay in the woods for a couple of days more you will be glad that you brought it, low energy reserves when lost or stuck in the woods can affect the way you think and also evoke panic, thinking straight and having the energy to do so could save your life in a bad situation.
